Tragic Ambush of a Battery Commander

After witnessing the hideous atrocity of Nordhausen, the battalion had a personal tragedy of their own.
A routine trip from his command of Battery B to Battalion HQ ended Captain Potter's life.  On the afternoon of 16 Apr 45, a jeep trip to HQ went terribly wrong.  Captain Gordon Potter, his driver Sergeant Albert Allgeier and PFC William Ousley were ambushed and incurred multiple bullet wounds. The battalion would not learn about their fate till 3 May, seventeen days later.  Three of the original Camp Edwards members.  Sgt Allgeier and PFC Ousley were from Pennsylvania and are buried in Margraten Cemetery in the Netherlands.  Capt. Potter was from Washington DC and is buried in Virginia.

Battalion Doctor Louis Small's Diary

Try this link for the diary accounts of the daily activity for the 474th AAA.
It was published online by his son - It was my "Rosetta Stone" for research into the unit.  Hope it helps!

Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine

Single Step

The longest journey begins with one.  This is the first time I have tried to put any of my research about the 474th in one place for anyone other then me or my wife to read.
Outside of conversations with surviving members of the Battalion and emails with family members of the veterans passed, the dissemination of information has been small.

My father was a member of the 474th and with the availability of more information on the Web, I was able to piece together some gaps in my collection of photos, maps and Bn. roster. I will try to include and add to these postings on a regular basis.  I hope it some small way it might help some family member in the frustrating search for some kernel of information about their relatives service in 474th AAA in World War II.

Please let me hear from anyone who might have any interest in the 474th AAA AW Bn (SP).
